Viterbo has the largest medieval historic center in Europe, but few Italians know it. It has the atmosphere, architecture and lifestyle of a village even if it is the size of an average city. Founded by the Etruscans, it was a rich and powerful city. Between 1200 and 1300 it controlled nearly 50 castles.
Viterbo was born as a prestigious medieval city and developed thanks also to the influence of the Church State: in the center of the city, in fact, the Loggia dei Papi is the most characteristic architecture that distinguishes the city from the nearby provinces. Also noteworthy is the city cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Nuova, but also the Lombard cloister, evidence of an expansion of that population even in central Italy.
For those wishing to relax, the gardens of Villa Lante are the attraction that we most recommend. Hectares of greenery, natural labyrinths and a care for the horticultural heritage that make this Villa an Italian pearl of great value.
